Is there a better place to be an herbivore than the Bay Area?

The region has a long history of vegetarian and vegan dining, from meatless Mexican to fish-free sushi.

To celebrate World Vegetarian Day, OpenTable put together a list of the 50 best vegetarian restaurants in the country using diners' reviews from the past year. Not every restaurant has an exclusively vegetarian menu, but each restaurant has popular veggie options.

See the five local restaurants that made the list (plus the fan-favorite dish at each place) in the slideshow at the top of this story.

Although longtime favorite spots like vegan restaurant Cafe Gratitude in Berkeley have closed, new restaurants pop up to spread the gospel of plant-based dining.

"There's no doubt that plant-based dining is a trend as we're seeing increasing interest in vegetarian menu options from our diners," said Caroline Potter, chief dining officer at OpenTable, said in a press release.

Of course, locals know there are way more than five amazing vegan/vegetarian restaurants in town. We've compiled a longer list — which probably still isn't long enough for plant eaters. Check out our list here and let us know what your favorite spot is in the comments.
